Pregnancy and Chiropractic
Pregnancy is a time of rapid physiological changes. The increasing laxity of connective tissues and the growing abdomen cause shifting of the weight-bearing structures which may cause the pregnant women to experience low back pain.
Chiropractic care can be quite helpful in alleviating the common discomforts of pregnancy such as back and neck pain as well as headaches.
Chiropractic is a unique approach to health. It is an all-natural, drug-less healing art that is based on the principle that good health depends primarily on a properly functioning nervous system. Why? The nervous system is the system that controls and coordinates all other systems. It is the body’s information super highway connecting the brain to all parts of body. The spinal cord and nerves run through the spinal column. Improper positioning or alignment of the vertebrae (spinal bones) can interfere with the flow of vital communication between the brain and the body. This common source of interference is called a vertebral subluxation. The result will be decreased function and vitality and/or pain. Chiropractors are specialists in locating and correcting subluxations which can be related to many of the uncomfortable symptoms associated with pregnancy and labor.
Chiropractic care during pregnancy provides comfort for the baby as well.
The uterus is suspended by four ligaments that anchor it to the pelvis. If the pelvis is out of alignment in any way, the ligaments can become torqued which skews the uterus. This can cause a constraint to the uterus. Constraint limits the space for the growing baby and as birth approaches can prevent the baby from settling into the optimal presentation for birth. If the head doesn’t present in the best position during labor the process can be slowed down. Often this can result in a cascade of medical interventions that could have been avoided if the pelvis was in proper alignment allowing space for the baby to present in the best position for delivery. Doctors of Chiropractic work specifically with correcting the alignment of the pelvis throughout pregnancy creating an environment for an easier and safer labor and delivery.
All chiropractors are trained in the care of the pregnant patient but some have a special interest or additional training. When choosing a chiropractor for pregnancy, look for Doctors of Chiropractic who are:
- Member of International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, reflecting a special interest
- CACCP – Certified with the ICPA reflecting advanced training
- Webster Certified – trained to work specifically with pelvic balance in pregnancy
